The Little Beauty Queen

Bravo 27/1986 (26-Jun-1986)

Sensual mouth, sligthly tanned velvet skin, great brown roe eyes - one can imagine Shalane McCall has won numerous beauty pageants as a teenager. Two years ago, the sweet 13-year-old has ended participating in those beauty pageants. That's when she got casted for the role of Charlie Wade in Dallas.

Her eyes glow as she tells how she became Priscilla Presley's TV- daughter. "I was participating in a beauty pageant in Palm Springs when my agent called me from Los Angeles. Two times I went to interviews with the Dallas bosses in Hollywood. But I feared I would not be casted. Another aspirant was in the producers' room two times, each time 45 minutes. With me they were only talking five minutes each time.

Back in Palm Springs, when I got that unbelievable call that I was chosen, I almost fainted. My grandma, who was with me, cried. We were running around in the hotel, knocked on every door and told everbody what had happened!"

Shalane, who was born on September, 16th 1972 in North Hollywood, California lives with her mother and manager Cherie Holton in a bungalow house in Sun Valley, California. Her father Clark McCall - her parents were never married - is a manager in a department store in Washington, D.C. Shalane has two step brothers: Justin (3) and Chris (10) who live at her father and his wife in Washington.

In the bungalow dominates a cozy chaos, a computer is located in a corner in Shalane's room where she does her homework. A brand new 'lips' telephone stands on the bedside table. It's a glaring red mouth that you pick up when the telephone rings.

Shalane is in the 7th grade at the Walter Reed Junior Highschool in North Hollywood. She has good marks in all subjects, her preferred subject is French. But to reconcile school and showbiz is not always easy. "When they call me on Saturday to film with me on Monday I have to write a report for all the lessons I missed, I hate that", she moans.

Moreover in the evening, she has jazz-dance lessons and on the weekends she engages herself in charity organisations. For example she is a speaker of a community of mentally disabled children.

Dedicated houseworks is not something she has to do. Her mother, who masters Shalane's career, says: "Shalane only has to carry out the garbage. Washing the dishes is not good for her hands and hands always have to look good in showbusiness."

During the interview her mother often interferes. She always accompanies Shalane to the film sets and gives her instructions. Do they argue? Cherie Holton: "No, when I shout sometimes, she listens. We point out things to each other."

And how is work with her Dallas mother Priscilla Presley? "I am a big Elvis fan", says Shalane, "but it is forbidden to ask Priscilla aboout him. At least I got a dedication of her book 'Elvis & Me' from her."

Shalane has clear imaginations about her future in showbusiness. "I hope that my role in Dallas will grow. Later she would like to direct and produce films. "But my biggest wish is to become a Rock'n'Roll star."
